Messy Seagulls

Does anyone know a good way to keep seagulls off a dock and boat? I've tried the owl, pinwheels, and whirlygigs but the birds don't stay away. Thanks.

I tried an owl too and it worked for about an hour. I found this low-cost, low-tech solution somewhere on the internet a couple of years ago and it works. Just string some kind of line (I used orange yarn) along the dock posts on one side of the dock about a foot high and criss-cross it over the boat. Apparently the birds don't like anything interfering with their path when landing and taking off. Be careful that the line doesn't become a tripping hazard and ensure that the line doesn't dangle in the water. I do get an occasional duck but they are friendly enough and don't make a big mess.

i find if i run frantically up and down my dock, swearing like a lunatic at all hours of the day the filthy birds are reluctant to land on my dock. you should try it if you have some time on your hands, works real good.

That would probably work; your neighbors must love you  Welcome to the forum.
I think I'll stick with the yarn idea. I did give it a try and it works. Thanks for the tip Blue Heron.

Although the yarn idea has been working quite well for me, I found a great site that others may find helpful. Here is a link: Boat Us Seaworthy Magazine - Bye Bye Birdie At the time of this posting it is seven pages of ideas for keeping birds, ducks, cormorants, terns, etc. off docks and boats. One woman calls the terns "The Turd Bird" ;)
